Lenten Focus: The Gospel of John

Our Lenten theme this year for preaching and study in the churches of the South Hills Partnership is the Gospel of John.

As anyone who’s read John can tell you, this Gospel is very different than the other three. It is the “spiritual gospel,” the gospel of the Word made Flesh, and the gospel of light and life.

Its portrait of Jesus is uniquely beautiful, demanding special focus and reflection.

That is why, in addition to preaching on John on Sunday mornings, we’re encouraging members of our churches to read through John for themselves during Lent and to plan to attend the Beyond service at Spencer UMC at 7 pm on Thursday evenings for an in-depth look at Adam Hamilton’s study, John: The Gospel of Light and Life.

Copies of this book will be available for a cost of $12.

Lenten Prayer Service

According to Christian tradition, Lent is a time of self-examination and repentance, a season of prayer, fasting, and self-denial, and a moment fit for reading and meditating on God’s Holy Word.

This Lent of 2017, we will hold a time for prayer, meditation, music, and reflection in the sanctuary of Carnegie UMC (415 Washington Ave, Carnegie, PA 15106) each Tuesday evening beginning at 7 pm.

All are welcome to join us for a short but meaningful Lenten prayer service.
